When Do You Want To Go?

Due to its location at the centre of the volcanic hot spot that created the archipelago, Fernandina is the youngest and the most volcanically active of any Galapagos Island. Spectacular eruptions occur every few years and evidence of black lava flow can be found everywhere. Wonderfully, the wildlife of Fernandina has adapted to the turbulent terrain and Land Iguanas have learned to harness the thermal energy to incubate their eggs and the raised temperatures of the surrounding waters attract huge shoals of fish, and thus large populations of Penguins and Flightless Cormorants thrive.

Few other sites can demonstrate the evolution of species and topography of the Galapagos as well as Fernandina and by its very definition, the island is utterly pristine. No species have ever been introduced here externally, and its human population has remained constant zero. In absence of practically any vegetation, the landscapes of the island are barren but there is perhaps no better place in the world to observe the raw and powerfully effect of evolution, both of landmass and species, as clearly.

What wildlife will I see on Fernandina?

The conditions of Fernandina are perfect for a number of wildlife species. Marine Iguanas thrive in large populations; an endless source of fish and plankton ensure the survival of Penguin colonies; Fur Seals bask on the shores with the limited threat of predators and its nutrient-rich surrounding waters ensure a steady supply of marine life. Fernandina is also one of the few islands where you can spot the enigmatic Flightless Cormorant.

How Do I Reach Fernandina?

As the far-most western island of the Galapagos, the only feasible way to experience Fernandina Island is by cruise ship. It is highly impractical to visit the island on a land itinerary and only a select few cruise itineraries include Fernandina due to its remoteness. If you wish to visit the island, please discuss with a Travel Specialist who will be able to match you with a perfect cruise itinerary.
