When Do You Want To Go?
As much about its human geography as it is its biodiversity, Floreana offers perhaps a very different Galapagos experience than any other island. The first of the islands to be colonised and with a history of pirating, whaling and even murder mysteries, Floreana remains one of few islands to best discover the human history side of the Galapagos. Of course, there is still plenty of wildlife to observe and beautiful rocky landscapes to admire and for snorkellers and divers, there are few sites in the archipelago better than the Devils Crown.
Its isolated location in the south of the Galapagos also adds to the appeal and with few human inhabitants, the island has an air of exclusivity about it. Highlights of Floreana include the volcanic black sand beach and Cormorant Point where visitors can embark on dingy rides along the coast or observe flamingos wading through the water in search of shrimp.

What wildlife will I see on Floreana?
For an Ornithophile, a visit to Floreana is a must. Not only is the island the best place to observe the beautiful courtship dance of the Galapagos Flamingo but the islets of the island are home to the extremely rare Galapagos Mocking Birds, of which fewer than 200 survive today. Many of the regular cast of the Galapagos can also be found on Floreana, including Sea Lions, Marine Iguanas and Blue Footed Boobies, although visitors may be disappointed to not be able to spot Giant Tortoises. Rumour has it that they have not been seen here since pirates purged the island in the 18th century.
By far the easiest way to experience Floreana is as a cruise ship passenger with many (but not all) cruise itineraries making stops at the island. For land itineraries, day tours from Santa Cruz can be arranged but can often be long days with the majority of the time spent on board ferries which may not be the best practical use of time. There are however small but comfortable accommodation options on the island itself, so if Floreana sparks an interest then a Travel Specialist will be able to talk through the best available options for you.
