Ecuador’s capital was the first city in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a stroll around some of the old town’s cobbled streets and it won’t take you long to appreciate why.
Unlike many big cities, Quito has managed to maintain all its character and history. Beautiful white-washed colonial buildings line the streets while plazas and churches uncover the city’s pre Columbian roots.
Venture away from the town centre and discover another side to the city. With a variety of parks and a spectacular cable car system running up the surrounding hillsides, Quito offers many opportunities to unwind amongst beautiful surroundings. Finally head back into town towards the district of La Mariscal for a taste of Quito’s vibrant nightlife.
The Area
Quito is the perfect base from which to explore Ecuador’s Pichincha district. Visit the Otavalo and run your fingers over the beautiful textiles the Andean village is famous for.
Take a soothing dip in one of the hot springs nestled in amid the nearby countryside or hop on a day trip to the Cotopaxi volcano. Visible from Quito on a clear day, the perfectly cone shaped giant is a marvel to behold.
Best Time to Go
Due to its vicinity to the equator, Quito sees similar temperatures all year round, with temperate days and cool evenings. June to August experience lighter rainfall compared to the rest of the year.
