Days 1-2 UK - Asuncion

On Day 1, you will depart the UK on your overnight international flight to Asuncion, where the afternoon will be spent discovering the city’s highlights. A combination of modern and colonial architecture, Asuncion has plenty to offer. See the National Pantheon of Heroes, the final resting ground of some of Paraguay’s greatest historic figures, and the Museo Casa de la Independencia, an unassuming 18th century house filled with colonial era furnishings, and the base for important conspiracies that led to Paraguay’s independence from Spain in 1811. Also visit the historical 19th century train station housing antique railcars and the oldest locomotive on the continent.

Day 3-4 Encarnacion

Depart the city and head south to Encarnacion, located on the banks of the Paraná River. Paraguay’s most southerly city is known as 'the pearl of the south' and your first afternoon will be spent discovering why. Visit the Plaza de Armas, the Stairs of San Pedro, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Itacuá and the waterfront, a hub for locals enjoying water sports and pretty sunsets.

On your second day visit the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangué, some of the best examples in the country. Founded in 1706, Trinidad was one of the most important and ambitious mission complexes of the 30 established along the Rio de la Plata. Continue to Cuidad del Este, on the border with Brazil and Argentina for the night.

Day 5 Monday Falls & Itaipú Dam

Meaning 'stolen water' in the native Guaraní language, Monday Falls is often overshadowed by nearby Iguazu Falls, but this series of cascades, dropping 45m and surrounded by forest, is stunning and well-worth visiting. In contrast to this natural wonder, Itaipú Dam is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern Technological World. This impressive dam produces an enormous amount of renewable energy and is an incredible feat of engineering. Your journey then continues across the border into Brazil.

Our bucket list trip to Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands had been looked forward to for a very long time. We were not disappointed! The highlight of our trip, without a doubt, was our five-day eastern cruise on the beautiful yacht La Pinta.
