Lima, known in colonial times as “the City of Kings” is more than just a gateway to Peru’s fascinating Andes Mountains and Amazon basin. Sitting on top of a cliff overlooking a bay on the Pacific Ocean, Lima offers several adventure activities thanks to its strategic position between the ocean and the mountains.
Museums with great works of art, archaeological sites, beaches, the boardwalk, nightlife and an exciting gastronomic scene give Peru’s capital an authentic personality. The gastronomic scene in Lima is currently exploding and many of the top chefs in Latin America have set up restaurants here.
Lima is a large city and there are only a few areas recommended for travellers to stay depending on what you want to see in Lima. Miraflores is a good and safe base to stay and there are plenty of excellent restaurants to try as well as many of Lima’s best hotels.
You will find the architecture and museums in central Lima where there are more budget accommodation options. For a more bohemian atmosphere we also recommend Barranco with its quirky market and boutiques.
Lima has a sub-tropical climate and enjoys much cooler temperatures than any other sub-tropical region. The climate is relatively mild and comfortable throughout the year with the warmest months being November to April
