When Do You Want To Go?
In years gone by, the only way to reach the sacred city of Machu Picchu in Peru was on foot, however, today you can utilise faster, more comfortable methods of transportation and travel via Inca Rail. Over 90% of travellers to the Seventh Wonder of the World now travel by train, therefore tickets are high in demand and should be booked in advance. Several trains per day depart from either Poroy or Ollantaytambo destined for Aguas Calientes beneath Machu Picchu. Arrive the evening before and experience the magnificent sunrise over the ancient Incan city. Alternatively, if you are staying in Cusco, you also have the option to travel via bus from Plaza de Armas for part of your journey before joining the Inca Rail train service at Ollantaytambo.
Inca Rail offers several train tickets to Machu Picchu. Choose from exclusive 8-seater coaches with gourmet meals, bar, live music and an observation balcony for yourself, family and friends, or if you prefer a more cost-effective method of transportation, there are train carriages with panoramic windows so you can focus on incredible vistas of ancient temples and villages.
High in the Andean mountains, Machu Picchu sits majestically just as it did centuries ago, as a hidden ancient civilisation for the Inca people. There’s much to see and do in the citadel, however, one highlight which shouldn’t be missed is the Sun Gate - once an entry and exit point into the city. For the best photo opportunities climb Huayna Picchu or spend time visiting Temple of the Sun which showcases some of the city’s finest stonemasonry. Don’t leave without venturing to Intihuatana, a pillar-shaped rock used by the Incas to predict astronomical activity.
