For the newest installment of Our Routes series dedicated to sharing travel experiences from our experts all over Latin America, Team Leader and Travel Specialist Charlie Mason shares with us the highlights of his marvellous multi-centre trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon and the Galapagos Islands.
Quito, Galapagos, and the Amazon.
I flew into Quito via Houston with United Airlines. And then flew on to the Galapagos and Coca (Amazon).
Repeat, this was my second time in Ecuador and Galapagos. Last time I did a land-based stay in Galapagos whereas this time on a cruise. I also visited Mindo cloud forest, Cotopaxi, and Antisana Volcano as day trips which are places I didn’t manage to visit on my first trip. I Have also visited Amazon in Bolivia so it was good to see the Ecuadorian side.
Forever the Galapagos! It’s why I work in travel now, I fell in love with the continent after I went there on my large backpacking trip. But the Amazon was also amazing.
Whilst in the Amazon, we went to a parrot clay lick. Whilst sitting in the boat in the river we saw a Boa constrictor perched off a branch hanging down, and it managed to catch a parrot mid-flight – was a real National Geographic moment!
Antisana Volcano was really great as it’s less visited than the likes of Cotopaxi but has stunning views and a lot higher chances of seeing the incredible Andean condors.
I recommend bringing a Poncho for sure, and a good pair of boots/walking shoes. This specifically applies to the Amazon but Ecuador is also prone to rain so when in remote areas it’s best to be safe!
I had an amazing Enconcado, which is a local dish made of seafood/fish in coconut sauce. We had it in an amazing restaurant overlooking the main plaza in Quito on our first night so set the bar high!
Anything underwater, that’s where the Galapagos comes alive! I had a GoPro so managed to get footage of me dancing with seals, turtles, penguins, flightless cormorants and countless fish!
I’ll be back!
